Trump Outlines Key Priorities for Upcoming Term

President-elect Donald Trump gave his first network television interview since the election on NBC’s Meet the Press, which aired Sunday morning. In a wide-ranging conversation with host Kristen Welker, Trump outlined his key priorities for his upcoming term, emphasizing his commitment to delivering on his campaign promises after taking office on January 20.

The interview, conducted Friday at Trump Tower in Manhattan, covered topics including immigration reform, economic policy, and his plans for addressing issues related to the January 6 Capitol incident.

Sweeping Immigration Reform

I think you have to do it,” he said. “You have rules, regulations, laws. They came in illegally. The people that have been treated very unfairly are the people that have been in line for 10 years to come into the country.”

Trump reiterated his firm stance on immigration, pledging to initiate mass deportations of individuals with criminal convictions while signaling a more measured approach to the issue of Dreamers—those brought to the United States illegally as children. “The Dreamers are going to come later,” he said. “We have to do something about the Dreamers, because these are people that have been brought here at a very young age, and many of these are middle-aged people now.” His remarks suggest a willingness to consider solutions for this group while maintaining his commitment to enforcing immigration laws.

Trump also reaffirmed his intention to end birthright citizenship, a proposal that has been central to his immigration platform. He did not provide details on the timeline or method for implementing such a policy, which would likely face significant legal challenges.

On economic policy, Trump expressed his desire to extend the tax cuts passed during his first term, a move aimed at bolstering economic growth. He also discussed the possibility of levying tariffs on imports from countries like Mexico, Canada, and China. However, when pressed about whether these tariffs could result in higher costs for American families, Trump was noncommittal, saying it was uncertain.

Addressing the fate of individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol events, Trump indicated he intends to issue pardons. He highlighted what he described as harsh treatment faced by some of the incarcerated individuals, stating, “The pardons will happen one day,” signaling this as a future priority for his administration.

Trump’s appearance on Meet the Press provided a glimpse into the policies and principles that will shape his second term. While his commitments remain ambitious, they also reflect the challenges ahead in balancing bold initiatives with political and legal realities.
