The Origin Story
Freedom is Our Origin Story
Every great organization has a powerful origin story. Our story began two centuries ago with the bold, God-fearing advocacy for freedom championed by Frederick Douglass. In one of his most famous speeches, Douglass exposed the hypocrisy of slavery in America. However, he did not despair, instead defying anyone to find a pro-slavery clause in the U.S. Constitution. Douglass understood that the Constitution’s words were hostile to slavery. More importantly, he believed in the scriptural promise that the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, making the doom of slavery certain.
With this certainty, Douglass advocated for freedom before and after the Emancipation Proclamation. Inspired by his legacy, Dean Nelson, Timothy Johnson, and Troy Rolling recognized the need for an African American-led organization in the public square. They championed free market principles, limited government, the sanctity of life, and the unique value of children being raised in a healthy home by a father and a mother. Despite their diverse backgrounds, Nelson, Johnson, and Rolling shared one uncompromising belief: the best solutions to the problems facing families, communities, and our nation are found through biblically sound principles.
The Frederick Douglass Freedom Alliance is a diverse coalition of proactive Americans dedicated to advancing the principles of freedom. Our members come from various backgrounds but share a common goal, to develop and implement solutions to the toughest problems facing our nation. Together, we advocate for the sanctity of free market ideas and limited government, believing in their power to transform society.
We exist to equip our members with the tools and resources they need to maximize their impact on public policy and popular culture.
Freedom is also our conversion story. Over the years, we have trained thousands of local leaders to mobilize around pro-freedom policies. We have trained local leaders to organize and knock on doors to support pro-family initiatives, distributing millions of voter guides across the country. In Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Michigan and Pennsylvania, our alliance has made the difference in key elections.
Our story is just beginning. Our new name The Frederick Douglass Freedom Alliance builds on the two most critical aspects of our work our passion for advocating for policies that increase individual liberties and strengthen alliances across the nation.
